The Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility (BRWRF) is an advanced wastewater treatment facility that serves eastern Loudoun County. Construction began in July 2004, and it began operations in May 2008. It is located next to our Operations & Maintenance Facility and our Administration Building in Ashburn. (Please note that our office is no longer in Leesburg.)

The Loudoun Water campus is surrounded by 128 acres of forested buffer, including 19 acres of wetland. The BRWRF supplements the treatment currently being provided to us by the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority at their Blue Plains facility.

Loudoun Water had planned for the Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility since 1975 and completed a Preliminary Design Study in 2000, which recommended the piloting of a membrane bioreactor process to meet stringent effluent limits. A pilot study was completed in 2001. The pilot confirmed that membrane bioreactor technology will achieve our desired effluent quality.

The cleaned water is returned to Broad Run, which joins the Potomac River 4.5 miles downstream. Loudoun Water has made significant investments in architecture, state-of-the-art odor control, and landscaping along Loudoun County Parkway in order to be a positive addition to the local community. We worked with a Citizen's Advisory Group to develop an outdoor interpretive area and indoor exhibit center that we call the Aquiary. For specific questions about the BRWRF, contact Bob Canham, Plant Manager, at 571.291.7823.
